Mediterranean Revival

Mediterranean revival is a stucco house in Houston’s Tanglewood neighborhood. Our client contacted us as the existing landscape had become overgrown and terribly unruly. Baldridge Landscape’s response was to design a clean crisp landscape that spoke to the style of the house and featured the architecture rather than obscure it. The landscape at the front of the house was designed in a potager fashion with the plant palette consisting largely of boxwoods and agaves which echoed the Mediterranean style. This allowed for seasonal plantings to be placed on edges of pots which are a very effective and low maintenance way to use seasonal color. Black and white awnings were added to the upper floor windows using black wrought iron spears as supports.

The existing garden at the back of the house consisted of disparate flatwork areas that did not provide ample space for circulation or seating. Baldridge Landscape designed a plan that increased the brick area to allow for chaise lounges as well as 10 top tables for parties and linked the spaces with paths. This increased the circulation of the space which opened up utility and access. A circular bench was designed at the far end of pool which increased utility of the hot tub as well as providing an interesting axial view from the house. The bench was designed in a demilune shape which echoed the curve of the hot tub and clad in beautiful French antique encaustic tile. In order to increase utility and group participation in the grilling area, brick benches were built and the French encaustic tile was inlaid into these as well. Antique French pots were placed around the pool and potted with citrus, boxwoods and agaves.
