Cultural Landscape Foundation Garden Dialogues

Baldridge Landscape is thrilled to be part of The Cultural Landscape Foundation Garden Dialogues being held on March 23, 2013. The discussion panel will be led by Cedar Baldridge, Principal at Baldridge Landscape, Dillon Kyle, Pricipal at Dillon Kyle Architecture, and Stephen Fox, Architectural Historian. “The Garden Dialogues bring together patrons and designers to reveal the design process, the give and take, and the collaboration that yields a great garden. The Garden Dialogues provides unique opportunities for small groups, of about 20 to 30 people, to experience some of today’s most beautiful green spaces created by some of the most accomplished designers currently in practice.”

Site Description and Process: The gallery sits on busy San Felipe Street, in Houston, Texas. The design intent was to evoke delight and begin the “art gallery” experience upon arrival to the site. The available space was very limiting which presented a design challenge. How to create a green space and provide maximum parking bays? The need for covered parking led to the parking structure. The need for a green space resulted in a merger of both. This all led to the design solution of wrapping the parking structure in a photograph of azalea leaves. The parking structure feels like a huge topiary while providing utility and a sense of folly all at once. The very traditional planting palette of Boston Ivy, single trunked Natchez Crape Myrtles and Elaeagnus provides a green outline to the architecture. The windows on the façade of the building, serve as vitrines for the revolving art collections. Boston Ivy was planted on the exterior façade resulting in a lovely green “frame” around each of the paintings.

The end result is a utile and happy space that can be used for parking and gallery functions, while providing an unexpected wink to the passerby.
